The Africa centres for Disease Control adn Prevention (Africa ⁤CDC) Emergency Consultative Group (ECG) has advised maintaining the Public health Emergency of continental Security (PHECS) for mpox. This recommendation stems from a review of the ⁢ongoing outbreak conducted⁤ on September 2, ⁣2025.

Strategic Importance of Continued Emergency declaration

The ⁢ECG concluded ⁢that preserving the emergency declaration is critical for ⁢sustaining political commitment, facilitating resource mobilization, and ensuring continued vigilance ⁣across African nations. Members emphasized that prematurely lifting ⁤the emergency status could lead to reduced funding, decreased public⁤ awareness, and a heightened risk of renewed mpox transmission.

Maintaining the PHECS⁤ allows the Africa CDC to ⁤continue coordinating a unified continental response to mpox, supporting member states in surveillance,⁢ vaccination efforts, and ‍clinical management. this proactive approach is considered essential to mitigate the long-term health and economic impacts ⁤of the disease.
