Interview with Ahmad Muzani, Speaker of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR)
Interviewer: Thank you for joining us today, Mr. Muzani. The recent launch of the Nationality and Sustainable Development Caucus (KKPB) is a significant step for local governance in Indonesia. Can you elaborate on the primary goals of the KKPB?
Ahmad Muzani: Thank you for having me. The KKPB is designed to bridge the gap between local policies and Indonesia’s national goals. With the upcoming 2024 Simultaneous Regional Head Elections (Pilkada), it is crucial to ensure that our regional leaders align their programs with our national vision. The caucus aims to promote sustainable development and foster active citizen participation, which is essential for a functioning democracy.
Interviewer: You mentioned the necessity of citizen engagement. In what ways do you foresee citizens participating in this process?
Ahmad Muzani: Active citizen participation can take many forms, such as community discussions, feedback mechanisms, and public consultations. We want citizens to be involved in decision-making processes, ensuring their voices are heard when selecting leaders and outlining local development programs. This dialog is crucial for a meaningful democracy that extends beyond procedural participation.
Interviewer: How do you plan to encourage Pilkada candidates to adopt development programs that reflect national priorities?
Ahmad Muzani: We believe that effective strategies must be in place to motivate candidates. Through the KKPB, we will showcase best practices and provide guidance on merging regional interests with national objectives. By equipping candidates with the right tools and knowledge, we can foster comprehensive strategies that benefit both local and national interests.
Interviewer: You stressed the importance of core national values in your speech. How will these values influence regional leaders’ decision-making?
Ahmad Muzani: Values such as Pancasila, the 1945 Constitution, the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI), and Bhinneka Tunggal Ika are the foundation of our nation. We expect regional leaders to uphold these values in their decisions, ensuring their policies resonate with our shared identity and aspirations. This alignment is critical to achieving both local and national goals.
Interviewer: Collaboration between central and regional governments seems vital for the KKPB’s success. Can you share how you envision this collaboration taking place?
Ahmad Muzani: Collaboration will be key. We plan to facilitate regular meetings and discussions among the central government, regional leaders, and the House of Representatives (DPR) to harmonize policies. Establishing clear communication channels will be essential for tracking policy implementation and ensuring that regional priorities are in sync with national actions.
Interviewer: Lastly, what role do you see Pilkada playing in this new framework?
Ahmad Muzani: Pilkada serves as an essential mechanism to elect regional leaders who are attuned to local needs and insights. By implementing the KKPB, we hope to guide these leaders toward understanding and addressing their constituents’ aspirations while keeping in mind the national vision. It is a crucial link that can enhance both local governance and national development.
Interviewer: Thank you, Mr. Muzani, for sharing your insights on the Nationality and Sustainable Development Caucus and the importance of aligning local governance with our national goals.
Ahmad Muzani: Thank you for having me. It’s a pleasure to discuss these important topics that will shape the future of Indonesia.
