MRF-Dogan Decides Euro Report
MRF-Dogan Weighs Future in Bulgarian Ruling coalition Amid Tensions
SOFIA, Bulgaria – The “Democracy, Rights and Freedoms” faction, widely known as MRF-Dogan, is currently deliberating its continued participation in Bulgaria’s ruling coalition. The group, associated with Ahmed Dogan, has expressed concerns regarding the GERB-BSP-ITN coalition’s handling of a key European convergent report expected in june.
Following internal discussions, MRF-Dogan representatives stated that their support for the report hinges on the exclusion of individuals ”sanctioned for severe corruption” and currently under investigation by the European Public Prosecutor’s Office. The faction insists on a “clear parliamentary majority” that excludes such figures.
The MRF-dogan has also outlined specific demands for the ruling coalition, signaling growing unease within the alliance.
In a formal declaration, the faction stated, “We do not accept to vote in the National Assembly [on] proposals that have not been discussed in the full format of the Joint Governance Council, and also for unsolicited support for them by the MRF group. We insist that the parties of the agreement be clearly distinguished from such ambitions of the Fraction of Delyan Peevski.” The declaration further indicated that MRF-Dogan would withhold support from legislative proposals perceived to be backed by Peevski’s allies.
The MRF-Dogan is also pressing coalition members to publicly disavow any reliance on votes from Delyan Peevski’s supporters to pass legislation.
The faction emphasized its commitment to the original coalition agreement, which stipulates thorough discussion of all decisions among the partners.
“The MRF is the party with the greatest coalition tradition in the democratic path of Bulgaria,” the declaration stated.”Accepting to create a parliamentary majority to form the goverment regularly, we have clearly argued our decision—to suspend the political crisis in the country [regarding] ‘Peevski.'” however, the MRF-Dogan acknowledged that the “political crisis” and the “Peevski model” have not been eradicated and, in fact, are escalating.
Tensions between MRF-Dogan and the three main parties in the government have simmered as the formation of the Zhelyazkov cabinet. MRF-Dogan initially supported the government with the expectation of gaining influence and protection against what thay perceived as institutional attacks orchestrated by Delyan Peevski.
In January, MRF-Dogan cited the dismantling of the “Peevski Model” as a primary reason for joining the ruling majority. The faction aimed to strengthen its position, but it claims that Peevski remains powerful, and MRF-Dogan lacks meaningful influence. According to the faction, rather of accepting MRF-Dogan’s proposed appointments, GERB-BSP-ITN announced a halt to the selection of new members in regulatory bodies.
Peevski model Allegedly Thriving
The conflict intensified recently after an incident where Peevski’s opposition group, “DPS-New Home,” reportedly supplanted MRF-Dogan in the selection of regulators. This event underscored Peevski’s continued influence, allegedly overshadowing the official partnership between the GERB-BSP-ITN coalition and MRF-Dogan.
Unnamed MRF-Dogan representatives told Mediapool that they where not surprised by these developments. They claim that despite agreeing to support the government, they were excluded from meaningful participation, with promises of representation in lower-level positions and input on key decisions going unfulfilled.
The promised “eradication” of the “Peevski Model” is, according to MRF-Dogan sources, resulting in its expansion at their expense.
prior to a recent meeting, sources familiar with MRF-Dogan’s position suggested the faction was likely to give the ruling coalition “one last chance,” continuing its support “under clearly specified conditions.”
When asked if MRF-Dogan might withdraw its support, Jayhan Ibreamov stated, “we are not in the extreme action. The MRF’s recent history has never shown that it is in the final decisions. We will make a serious political decision that will be announced to the media and our partners.”
Internal Discord Within MRF-Dogan
Meanwhile, dissent is growing within MRF-Dogan itself. Supporters of Ahmed Dogan, who previously united against perceived threats from Peevski’s “New Beginning,” are now voicing opposition to their own leader, Dzhevdet Chakarov, and his inner circle.
On a Facebook group known as a stronghold for Dogan supporters, dissatisfaction has been expressed regarding the decision to support the GERB, BSP, and ITN cabinet. This discontent has reportedly intensified due to Chakarov’s perceived ineffectiveness.
yugel Attilla, a former deputy minister of transport and a founding member of the party structure in Haskovo, has called for Chakarov’s replacement with “new, young, spotless, brave, devoted and addicted staff.” Attilla has also suggested that Dogan’s supporters abandon their legal battle for control of the MRF party and form a new political entity.
Sources close to the current MRF-Dogan leadership claim that Attilla’s actions stem from a personal conflict with the leadership. However, they acknowledge that the possibility of forming a new party has been discussed. “As then, the topic has been set for reflection, but not for the final decision,” sources close to Chakarov said.
Both critics and allies of the current leadership confirm that Chakarov and his associates have met with Ahmed Dogan.
Following a meeting, Dzhevdet Chakarov publicly stated that the formation of a new party was not under consideration by MRF-Dogan.
