Mudryk Faces Potential Ban After ⁣Failed Drug Test

Updated June 19, ‌2025

Chelsea⁢ winger Mykhailo Mudryk,⁢ 24, is in hot⁤ water with the ‌Football Association (FA) after allegedly violating anti-doping regulations. The FA has ⁣charged Mudryk, a Ukraine international, with the offense, possibly leading to a four-year ban from soccer. The charges stem from an “adverse finding”‍ during a⁢ routine urine test, which resulted in his provisional ⁤suspension in⁣ December.

FIFA guidelines stipulate ⁣that athletes intentionally using prohibited⁤ substances ‍can face bans of up to ⁣four years. Mudryk, who last played ⁣for‍ Chelsea on Nov. 28 and hasn’t been in a matchday squad ‍since Dec. 1, is currently barred from training with the team. Chelsea is reportedly providing support for his mental well-being during this ‍arduous period.

The FA released⁤ a statement Wednesday confirming the charges against ⁢Mudryk, citing regulations 3 and 4 of their anti-doping policies. The association declined further ⁢comment due to the ongoing nature of the⁢ case.

In December, Chelsea stated they would⁣ investigate the cause of the failed test. The club‌ relayed Mudryk’s firm ‍denial of knowingly using any banned substances.

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca voiced his support for Mudryk, stating, “We support Mykhailo and trust means that we⁢ believe Mykhailo.”

FA regulations allow ‍players to request analysis of ⁣a B sample if the initial A sample yields adverse results. If the B sample confirms the presence of a prohibited substance, formal charges are filed. Players then have the option to accept the⁤ consequences or request a hearing.

Chelsea acquired Mudryk from Shakhtar Donetsk in January 2023 for ‌a deal valued at up to ⁢£89 million. His contract extends until June 2031. To date, Mudryk has scored 10⁤ goals in 73 appearances for the Blues across all competitions.

What’s next

Mudryk has ⁣the right to⁤ request that his B sample be tested. The‍ results of ‌that test, and any subsequent hearing, will determine the length of any⁣ potential ban.
