Multiple people died following a collision involving a police vehicle and a car on the A66 in Middlesbrough, according to Cleveland Police and the North East Ambulance Service. The fatal crash occurred during the early hours of the morning in the South Bank neighbourhood, prompting a large emergency response and a closure of the major roadway in both directions.
Early-Morning Collision Shuts Down Major Thoroughfare
According to Cleveland Police, the collision took place around 3:39 am on the A66 in South Bank. The incident involved a police vehicle and a Volkswagen Passat. Authorities confirmed that multiple fatalities occurred at the scene and that emergency services remain deployed in the area.
Massive Emergency Response Deployed to the Scene
The North East Ambulance Service stated that it was alerted to a two-vehicle crash and dispatched 14 units to the location, including ambulance crews, a specialist paramedic, a doctor from the Great North Air Ambulance, and a hazardous response team.
Sadly, despite the best efforts of everyone attending, a number of patients died at the scene,
the North East Ambulance Service said in a statement reported by Metro. We send condolences to all of those affected by such a tragic event and thank everyone for all they did to help.
Road Closures and First Responder Operations
Cleveland Fire Brigade also attended the collision on the westbound carriageway of the A66, urging motorists to avoid the area. The road was closed between Normanby Road and Church Lane in Eston.

Local officials expressed condolences following the incident. Anna Turley, the MP for Redcar, stated that she was deeply saddened by the fatal crash.

Police have not yet publicly released the identities of the victims as officers work to contact families. Cleveland Police asked members of the public to avoid speculation while the investigation continues.
