Several fatal motorcycle accidents occurred across Baden-Württemberg on April 11, 2026. Among the victims was a 19-year-old.
According to reporting from SWR, many motorcyclists used the sunny weather on April 11, 2026, to take trips, which ended in fatal crashes in multiple regions of the state.
Trends in Motorcycle Fatalities
These incidents follow a trend of increasing fatalities among motorcyclists in Baden-Württemberg, despite a decrease in the overall number of accidents. In the 2025 motorcycle season, which spanned from March to October, 67 people died in motorcycle accidents, an increase of four deaths compared to the previous year.
During that same period in 2025, police recorded 4,050 motorcycle accidents, representing a 3.1 percent decrease compared to the 2024 season. The number of injured persons also declined by 2.5 percent to 3,311, and the number of seriously injured persons fell by approximately 11 percent to 883.
In the 2024 motorcycle season, which also ran from March to October, there were 4,115 motorcycle accidents, 3,351 of which resulted in personal injury. During that season, 63 motorcyclists died. For comparison, over 100 people died during the motorcycle season in 2017.
Primary Causes and Responsibility
Official statistics identify excessive or unadapted speed as the primary cause of severe and fatal motorcycle accidents. In the 2024 season, speed was the leading cause in 41.9 percent of motorcycle accidents involving personal injury and 48.6 percent of fatal motorcycle accidents.

Data indicates that motorcyclists are responsible for the majority of these incidents. Nearly two-thirds of the most fatal accidents were caused by the riders themselves, often due to high speeds in curves, on wet roads, or in areas with poor visibility.
Baden-Württemberg Interior Minister Thomas Strobl has emphasized the goal of Vision Zero
, aiming for zero deaths and serious injuries in road traffic. Strobl has stated that there is still work to be done in sensitizing riders to the dangers of excessive speed.
General Road Safety Context
The rise in motorcycle deaths occurs within a broader shift in road safety statistics for the state. The official traffic accident balance for 2025 showed that while the total number of seriously injured people reached a historic low, the total number of road deaths increased by 7.9 percent, rising to 367 people compared to 340 in 2024.
The total number of traffic accidents in 2025 rose slightly by 0.6 percent to 314,129. In nine out of ten of these cases, only property damage occurred. However, the increase in deaths among vulnerable road users, particularly cyclists and motorcyclists, has been noted as a point of concern for traffic safety officials.
