A Mumbai auto driver’s entrepreneurial venture, lauded as a street business masterclass, has been shut down. The driver, who reportedly earned between 500,000 and 800,000 rupees monthly, is now back to his original role: ferrying passengers.
the scheme began outside the U.S. Consulate in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). Visa applicants, barred from bringing bags inside and lacking locker facilities, became the target market. The auto driver identified a unique gap in service.

“Sir, give me the bag, I will keep it safe. It’s my daily fare. Charge is 1,000 rupees,” the driver would say.
The driver reportedly served 20 to 30 customers daily, earning 20,000 to 30,000 rupees each day. This translated to a monthly income in the lakhs, achieved without technology, apps, or startup funding.The innovative role the driver played was praised as pure street-smart entrepreneurship.
However,the success attracted unwanted attention,including that of local police. BKC police officials, surprised by the driver’s earnings, investigated and discovered about a dozen auto drivers running similar unofficial locker services.The police deemed the practice a significant security risk, especially near the U.S. Consulate.
Authorities issued a warning,emphasizing that storing belongings without verification or a license is illegal and potentially dangerous. the auto drivers’ bag storage role was immediately shut down.
Reports indicate the driver partnered with a local police officer who provided a private storage space.The auto driver served as a pickup point. With the bag storage scheme dismantled, the auto driver is back to transporting passengers. The incident sparks debate about the line between clever business and risky loopholes within India’s informal economy and the significant role of security.
