Jaime Munguia Faces Potential Sanction After Positive Test
Updated May 29, 2025
Jaime Munguia, a former junior middleweight titleholder, is facing scrutiny after reportedly testing positive for a banned substance following his May 4 victory against Bruno Surace. The positive test could jeopardize Munguia’s win and lead to a suspension.
According to a representative from Munguia’s team, who spoke with “ESPN KnockOut” commentator Salvador Rodriguez, they received notification from the Voluntary Anti-doping Association (VADA) regarding the presence of exogenous testosterone metabolites in Munguia’s test A sample. The team plans to request analysis of Test B.
Munguia (45-2, 35 KOs) has 10 days to request the B sample analysis. Should the B sample also yield adverse findings, his recent decision win could be overturned to a no contest. He could also face a suspension ranging from six months to a year.
munguia addressed the situation on social media, stating that he underwent two negative tests during training camp. He called the VADA notification “a complete surprise” and expressed his willingness to undergo further testing to prove he is a “clean athlete.”
I’m willing to undergo any retroactive, current, or future testing to demonstrate that I have always been a clean athlete.
Golden Boy Promotions, Munguia’s promoter, has not yet issued a statement.
Munguia’s victory over Surace earlier this month was a rematch, avenging a previous knockout loss in December. The bout took place on the Riyadh Season card, headlined by Canelo Alvarez’s win over William Scull.
What’s next
The boxing world awaits the results of Munguia’s Test B sample. The outcome will determine the validity of his recent win and his immediate future in the sport.
