MUNICH – A new restaurant, “Eli,” has opened it’s doors near the Elisabethmarkt in Munich’s Schwabing-West ‌neighborhood. While the name evokes associations with⁤ empress Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary, known as Sisi, the owners say‌ the moniker was simply appealing.

Michael F. Schottenhamel, Peter Kinner, and Julian Kinner, the operators, secured the space in a newly constructed building complex located between Arcisstrasse and Nordendstrasse. ‍The building,⁢ developed by ⁢Sparkasse on the former site of Stadtwerke Munich, also houses apartments, offices, retail spaces, and an underground parking garage.

Eli’s opening occurred approximately six months after the unveiling⁤ of the rebuilt Elisabethmarkt. This⁢ venture marks another collaboration for Schottenhamel and the elder Kinner, who jointly ‍manage the ‍Schwaige‌ castle economy ⁤in nymphenburg and ⁤the ⁢Weichandhof in ⁤Obermenzing. Peter Kinner also partners with⁤ his son, Julian, at the Emmeramsmühle in Oberföhring.

The restaurant boasts 200 ⁤indoor seats, with plans to add 120 outdoor seats on a terrace. the interior features‍ an open, modern design, ⁢incorporating a light gray stone bar, light⁢ wood tables, and expansive ⁢windows that offer views of the bustling Elisabethmarkt. ‌Royal blue walls are adorned with an image of Sisi.

According to Peter Kinner, the decision was made to avoid⁣ the traditional ⁤Bavarian inn style. “If I want Bavarian food in Munich, I‌ go to the city center,” ⁣he said. The operators aim to cater to Schwabing-West’s ⁤diverse population of “artists and ‌cosmopolitans” with a more innovative menu.

Innovative Menu features Vegetarian and Vegan Options

While many restaurants tout “innovative” menus, Eli appears to deliver on the promise. Austrian chef Andreas Kasper, formerly of Asam Schlössl, has crafted a menu featuring light dishes, with a focus on vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options.

Starters, priced at 7.40 ⁣euros ‌each, include options like sweet potato fritters (with or without ‍bacon ‍or dulse algae), ⁤fried chorizo‍ with artichokes, baked pumpkin with curry salsa,⁣ and grilled goat cheese with goji berries and apple. The menu also⁣ offers ⁣soups, salads,⁣ sandwiches, and pasta dishes, alongside the house specialty: freshly baked rice waffles.

These are not the typical dry rice cakes, but rather sushi rice baked in a waffle‍ iron until golden brown and crispy. These waffles serve as a base for various toppings, such as salmon trout with fennel-date salad (17.50 euros), braised eggplant‍ with pomegranate ‌sauce (15.50 euros), or spicy cucumber salad with chili⁤ and garlic (12.50 euros).

Vegan main ‍courses‍ include ‌grilled watermelon with fennel and peppers, and ‍cauliflower steak with rosemary potatoes and vegetables. Meat dishes include braised pork from the Mangalitza breed (22.50 euros), served with potato-celery puree and vegetables, and pan-fried veal liver with rösti and marjoram ⁢sauce ⁤(26.20 euros).

Even though Eli aims to be different from a Bavarian inn, it still ⁤offers bavarian beer. A half-liter of Tegernseer beer costs‌ 4.90 euros. The beverage menu also includes wines, spritzers, and cocktails.weekend brunch⁢ is available until ⁢2 p.m., and the restaurant plans to introduce a lunch menu during the week.

Eli⁤ is located at Elisabethplatz 20,80796⁣ Munich. Hours are Monday to Friday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., and Saturday and ⁢Sunday,⁢ 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.⁤ The ⁣phone number is 089/20 57 32 82.
