News Directory 3: Alex, congratulations on your new role as Forwards Coach Consultant with Munster Rugby. Can you share your feelings about this opportunity?
Alex Codling: Thank you! I’m really excited about the chance to work with Munster. It’s a club with a storied history and a passionate fan base. I see this as a fantastic opportunity to contribute my experience and help develop the forwards in a competitive environment.
ND3: You’ll be splitting your time between Munster and the Ireland Women’s team until the 2025 Women’s Six Nations. How do you plan to manage both roles effectively?
AC: It will certainly be a balancing act. Communication is key here. I will ensure that both teams are aware of my commitments. The structure of the Ireland Women’s program and Munster’s schedule will allow me to dedicate time effectively to both roles. I’m looking forward to leveraging the experiences from both squads to create a consistent coaching philosophy.
ND3: Your experience includes coaching various high-profile teams, including the Newcastle Falcons and the senior England men’s team. How do those experiences shape your approach with Munster?
AC: Each experience has taught me valuable lessons about player development and team dynamics. At Newcastle, I learned the importance of building a cohesive unit, and my time with the senior England team reinforced the significance of mental toughness. With Munster, I hope to instill some of these values and create an environment where players feel empowered to perform at their best.
ND3: Reflecting on your recent work with the Ireland Women’s team during the WXV1 campaign, what insights do you aim to bring to Munster’s forwards during your time here?
AC: The WXV1 campaign was a great learning experience, highlighting the need for adaptability and strategic play. I aim to bring that same sense of flexibility to Munster’s forwards while emphasizing the fundamentals of scrummaging and set-piece work. I believe that a strong foundation can lead to a more dynamic playing style on the pitch.
ND3: What are your immediate goals as you step into this role with Munster?
AC: My immediate goal is to integrate myself with the existing coaching staff and get to know the players. Understanding their individual strengths and areas for improvement will be crucial. I want to build trusting relationships and focus on enhancing our forwards’ skills and unity as we work towards upcoming fixtures.
ND3: Lastly, what do you hope to achieve during your time with Munster before a permanent coach is appointed?
AC: I hope to leave a positive impact, set a strong foundation, and ensure that the forwards are not only prepared for games but also in a good place mentally and physically. Ultimately, I want to contribute to a seamless transition when the permanent coach steps in, ensuring continuity in our forward play.
ND3: Thank you for your time, Alex. We look forward to seeing the impact you’ll have at Munster Rugby.
AC: Thank you! I appreciate the support and look forward to this exciting journey.
