The European Union designated Murcia,Spain,as an international reference city for the circular economy,urban sustainability,and international cooperation,according to a case study published on January 10,2026,by the International Urban and Regional Cooperation (IURC) program.
The IURC program, funded by the European Commission, highlighted the collaboration between the Murcia City Council and the city of Albuquerque, New Mexico, as a triumphant example of transatlantic cooperation. The partnership demonstrates tangible and replicable results in local public policy.
“This recognition confirms that the circular economy in Murcia has a real impact on people’s lives, the protection of the habitat, and the generation of new economic opportunities and enduring employment,” stated Mercedes Bernabé, Councilor for Open Government, Economic Promotion, and employment for the Murcia City Council.
