Family’s Heartfelt Tribute
In a moving statement released today, the Brannigan family expressed their profound grief and gratitude for the outpouring of support from the community.
“in the midst of our shock, pain and total heartbreak at the brutal murder of our beloved dad, grandad, son and brother Stephen yesterday,we want to convey our sincere thanks to all those who have surrounded us with such love and care in the hours that have followed,” the statement read.
The family specifically thanked those who organized and participated in a prayer vigil held Sunday evening at St.brigid’s Church in downpatrick, describing it as a testament to the strength and compassion of the Marian Park and wider Downpatrick community.
Concern for Injured Priest, Father John Murray
The family also extended their thoughts and prayers to Father John Murray, who remains hospitalized in serious but stable condition after being attacked.
“fr John is highly respected by our family and by all in our community,” the statement continued. “It is so typical of his kindness that he was willing to reach out in trust to someone he believed was in distress, despite the obvious risk to himself.”
They expressed hope for his full recovery and acknowledged his prayers for them, conveyed through fellow priests of the parish.
A Life of Kindness and Community Spirit
Beyond the tragic circumstances of his death, the family painted a picture of a man dedicated to helping others. Stephen Brannigan was known throughout the neighborhood for his willingness to lend a hand and contribute to the well-being of those around him.
The statement revealed that even on the day before his death, Mr. Brannigan was tending to the graves of friends and neighbors, a routine he performed almost daily, including visiting the grave of his late wife, Dorenda, who passed away five years ago after battling cancer.
Facing Personal Struggles
Acknowledging the complexities of life, the family stated, “Stephen faced many difficult issues in his life. We know his life was not perfect. But for us, he was our dad, our grandad, our son and our brother.”
They emphasized that Dorenda was his constant source of strength, and expressed their hope that they are now reunited in peace and love.
