Charleston, S.C.-based MUSC Health is expanding its use of virtual nursing to include its Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), marking one of the first health systems in the nation to implement this technology in such a specialized setting. The expansion, which began in January , builds upon a successful pilot program utilizing virtual nurses in the hospital’s med-surg unit.
The collaboration with startup VirtuAlly aims to address the unique demands of NICU care, which requires “precision and constant coordination” as medical teams care for the most vulnerable patients, according to Emily Warr, MSN, RN, administrator for the MUSC Center for Telehealth and a former NICU nurse. “Bringing the VirtuAlly partnership into the NICU strengthens our nursing coverage effectiveness, streamlines team-based nursing workflows for added efficiency, and helps ensure our newborns receive the highest level of care in the critical first days of their lives,” Warr stated in a news release.
Virtual nursing, as implemented by MUSC Health and VirtuAlly, isn’t intended to replace bedside nurses. Instead, it functions as a supportive layer, augmenting the existing clinical team. VirtuAlly’s virtual nurses are highly trained clinicians, with an average of 13 years of experience, and their role within the NICU focuses on several key areas. These include real-time collaboration with bedside staff to enhance patient safety initiatives, providing comprehensive discharge education to families, assisting with essential documentation and care coordination, and offering orientation support to families navigating the complexities of the NICU environment.
The need for such support is significant. NICUs, particularly Level IV units like the one at MUSC – the only such unit in South Carolina – care for the most critically ill newborns, often born prematurely or with severe medical conditions. These infants require constant monitoring and a highly coordinated approach to care. The addition of virtual nurses aims to alleviate some of the administrative burden on bedside staff, allowing them to dedicate more time to direct patient care. What we have is achieved through assistance with tasks like documentation, which can be substantial in a complex care setting like a NICU.
Beyond the logistical benefits, the virtual nursing program also addresses the critical need for enhanced family support. Discharge education, a key component of the virtual nurse’s role, is designed to reduce readmission rates by ensuring families are well-prepared to care for their infants at home. The virtual nurses can provide translation and language support, ensuring all families have access to clear and understandable information about their baby’s care. This is particularly important in a diverse patient population.
VirtuAlly’s expansion into the NICU represents a broader trend toward utilizing virtual nursing to address staffing challenges and improve healthcare delivery.
