Regent’s Park to Stage Dream Ballets: A Triple Bill
Regent’s Park Open Air theatre is set to present ”Dream Ballets: A Triple bill” from June 19-22. The production, a highlight of Drew McOnie’s inaugural season as artistic director, will reimagine classic dream ballets, aiming to showcase dance as a powerful storytelling tool.
McOnie, who has long been captivated by dream ballets, explained that these sequences allow choreographers to express characters’ inner psychologies through dance, where words fail. He commissioned three choreographers—Shelley Maxwell, Kate Prince and Julia cheng—to reinterpret dream ballets from “Oklahoma!,” “Carousel,” and “Allegro.”
Prince is choreographing the “Carousel” ballet. She said she wanted to create a humorous and light piece with a deeper, underlying context. Her ballet is set around a park bench and centers on a nomad character, exploring themes of appreciating life’s simple pleasures.
McOnie emphasized the significance of Agnes de Mille’s work, noting that her choreography “liberated our form of storytelling.” He hopes to reintroduce dream ballets into musicals, highlighting their value in conveying global stories through dance.
