Recent Artistic Cancellations Raise Concerns
Budapest is witnessing a concerning trend of last-minute cancellations affecting artists and performers, sparking debate about artistic freedom and political influence. On Tuesday morning, Krisztián Grecsó announced via facebook that a planned lecture and performance with Róbert Hrutka at the Millenaris Artist Garden program had been cancelled, reportedly due to “thematic changes.” The event was to replace previously scheduled astronomical discussions and a performance titled How can I live without you?

This cancellation follows a pattern of similar incidents, raising questions about a potential coordinated effort to limit artistic expression critical of the current goverment.
A Controversial Video and a “Filthy” list
The timing of the cancellation is particularly noteworthy. Just days prior, Krisztián Grecsó featured in a drone video for Life and Literature, titled My father’s mansion, where he made comments questioning the financial arrangements of those in power, including a reference to the Prime Minister. He expressed bewilderment at the perceived disparity in resources, stating, “My father also had an economy… I do not understand when the country’s affairs and the Zebras are eaten.”
Adding another layer of complexity, Róbert Hrutka is among the artists recently included on a list of individuals deemed “filthy” by Tamás Deutsch, a prominent figure within the ruling party. This list also included ByeAlex, both of whom were subsequently removed from performing at the August 20 State Ceremony without official justification, as reported by 444.hu. The lack of transparency surrounding thes decisions has fueled speculation about a broader campaign targeting artists with dissenting views, coinciding with what some are calling a “Filthy Fidesz summer.”
A Pattern of Contract Terminations
These incidents are not isolated. Just weeks ago, a contract with the band Punnany Masiff was terminated after they performed while wearing a t-shirt referencing a critical publication at the tusványos festival. The organizer, Balázs Kuslics, head of the Fidesz municipality in Sopron and linked to the government-aligned Mediaworks, initially cited budgetary reasons for the cancellation, claiming a saving of 1 million forints. However, sources near City Hall revealed the city incurred a penalty fee for breaking the valid contract with the band, as detailed by 444.hu.
