Elon musk Blasts Trump’s Tax and Spending Package as “Disgusting”
Updated June 03, 2025
Former White House adviser Elon Musk has strongly criticized President Donald Trump’s proposed tax and spending package, labeling it a “disgusting abomination.” The Senate is currently considering the measure, aiming for passage before July 4.
In a post on X, Musk stated, “Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it.” He described the package as a “massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill.” This statement marks Musk’s most public disagreement with the President to date.
Musk’s criticism focuses on the bill’s potential to increase the national deficit. He argues it would “massively increase the already gigantic budget deficit to $2.5 trillion (!!!) and burden [American] citizens with crushingly unsustainable debt.” Budget analysts project the legislation could add over $2.5 trillion to the national deficit over the next decade.
The Congressional Budget Office estimates that while the bill includes cuts to programs like Medicaid and food stamps, the tax cuts and other provisions would increase the deficit by $2.3 trillion to $5 trillion over the same period.
The House passed the GOP tax and spending bill by a narrow margin last month. The bill extends Trump’s 2017 tax cuts, creates new tax breaks, and raises the federal debt ceiling by $4 trillion. Trump has dubbed it “One Big, Beautiful Bill.”
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt responded to Musk’s criticism during a press briefing, stating,”The President already knows where Elon Musk stood on this bill.It doesn’t change the President’s opinion.”
House Speaker Mike Johnson called Musk’s criticism “disappointing” and ”surprising,” adding,”With all due respect,my friend Elon is terribly wrong about the one big, beautiful bill.”
Though, Musk’s comments have resonated with fiscal conservatives. Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, responded to Musk’s post, saying, “The Senate must make this bill better.” Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., echoed this sentiment, stating, “I agree with Elon. We have both seen the massive waste in government spending and we certainly know another $5 trillion in debt is a huge mistake. We can and must do better.”
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga.,expressed regret for voting for the bill, citing a provision that she says strips states of the authority to regulate artificial intelligence for a decade. “I am adamantly OPPOSED to this and it is a violation of state rights,” she wrote.
Musk previously served as head of the Department of Government Efficiency, an advisory office created by Trump. He has also criticized Trump’s trade policies in the past.
What’s next
The Senate will continue to debate the tax and spending package.Amendments and further negotiations are expected before a final vote.
