Trump-Musk Feud Highlights Government control Over musk’s Companies

⁢ Updated June‍ 08, 2025

The escalating public feud between ‍Elon Musk and⁤ former President Donald Trump has ⁢revealed the extent of⁢ U.S. government control over Musk’s enterprises, according ‌to Ark Invest CEO Cathie Wood. She suggests investors are now keenly aware of the ‌government’s ⁣influence on Tesla,‍ SpaceX, and other Musk ventures.

Wood⁣ noted that many‌ of Musk’s companies heavily⁢ rely on government support. These companies have received billions in federal loans, contracts, tax credits, and subsidies‌ over the years. The ongoing dispute ‌with ⁣Trump could be Musk’s attempt to distance himself from the former management, she added.

SpaceX, for instance, holds $22 billion in federal contracts, according to COO Gwynne Shotwell. Neuralink, Musk’s brain-chip company, faces FDA regulations. A‍ stricter regulatory environment could also impede Tesla’s robotaxi plans. News of the ⁤feud initially triggered a sharp drop⁤ in Tesla stock.

The ⁤tension seemingly began after Musk criticized Trump’s “One Big Lovely bill,” ‍labeling it a “revolting abomination” that‌ would inflate the national deficit. The relationship further deteriorated when Trump threatened to⁤ cut⁣ Musk’s government contracts. Musk ⁣initially responded by threatening to decommission SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft, which ‍recently ‍returned ⁣NASA astronauts from ⁤the International Space Station, but later retracted the statement.

“I⁤ think the way this⁣ is evolving is ⁤Elon, Tesla, and investors ⁤are beginning to understand ⁣more and more just how ‌much⁢ the government has control here,” Wood said.

Despite the conflict, Wood believes both Trump and Musk will‌ eventually recognize the need to avoid a prolonged‌ battle. She remains confident in‍ Musk’s ability to navigate ‍the situation, noting his capacity to thrive‌ under pressure.

However, Trump has indicated little interest in reconciliation. “I have no intention of speaking to‍ him,” Trump told NBC News, adding that⁢ Musk is⁤ “very disrespectful”‌ to the‌ office of the president.

vice President JD Vance offered a more conciliatory view, expressing hope that Musk would ⁤”figure it out” and “come back into the fold,” despite considering Musk’s criticism of Trump a “huge mistake.”

What’s next

The future relationship between Musk and Trump remains uncertain, but the feud has brought increased scrutiny to the government’s role in regulating and⁢ funding Musk’s various ventures, potentially impacting future contracts and regulatory approvals for Tesla, SpaceX,‍ and Neuralink.
