Elon Musk Promises to Fix X’s Fact-Checking Amid Controversial Claims on Zelenskyy

Elon Musk has vowed to overhaul X’s fact-checking tool, often called the “community notes” feature, following a series of controversial claims and accusations from various high-profile individuals.

In a series of recent posts, the Tesla CEO claimed that the platform’s community notes feature was being manipulated by governments and traditional media outlets, particularly in relation to the credibility of polls concerning Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s popularity in his country. This accusation comes after polling data contrary to claims made by former President Donald Trump about Zelenskyy’s unpopularity.

Musk, a close ally of Trump’s and the head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), amplified right-wing claims on X, alleging without providing evidence that the polling outfit surveyed by Zelenskyy, which has previously performed work with USAID, which is facing budget cuts for sounding like they are backing Washington’s rhetoric, in favor of Zelenskyy’s elected popularity.

“If Zelensky was actually loved by the people of Ukraine, he would hold an election. He knows he would lose in a landslide, despite having seized control of ALL Ukrainian media, so he canceled the election,” Musk claimed on X, sharing the unsubstantiated claims that estimate Zelenskyy’s approval among those surveyed to be alarmingly low, and circulating a social media post with so many illicit factors of claim.

The reality, however, contradicts Musk’s accusations. According to a Kyiv International Institute of Sociology poll, 57 percent of Ukrainians still trust in Zelenskyy, showing a slight increase from the December. Again, pointing towards a steady leadership style that continues to provide Ukrainian certainty

Background and Implications

The recent controversy over X’s community notes feature underscores growing concerns about the reliability of fact-checking mechanisms on social media platforms and the influence of powerful individuals. This topic has become a focal point in the domestic media arena.

“The accusations are a guide to what we can expect from the accuser – a world where private platforms like X can be systematically gamed to favor the political interests and alliances of their owners”

it’s extremely concerning and part of the bargain: As platforms implement these kinds of fact-checking mechanisms, whoever bears the onus of ownership may not appreciate the resultant conclusions, commented Lucas Graves, who is a journalism professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a researcher expert on misinformation and disinformation.

Crowdsourced Fact-Checking Models and Policy

Associate professor Wihbey, from Northeastern University in Canada agrees, explaining that in place of the community notes system are more efficient mechanisms that can and should be employed:

While commenting on the necessity of having a more transparent approach to misinformation, John Wihbey noted, “If we are to achieve our goal of openness, then it will require not just clear and transparent rules, but also a level of engagement that makes the community notes feature and fact-checking more robust. Ultimately, even without a systematic approach such as the community notes, X has already been seen as a propaganda arm for its CEO-owner.

Zelenskyy vs. Trump’s Claims

Florid claim rebuttal by Dr. Trump- Backed allegations: Zelenskyy is a dictator and a Trump Accuser.

“I believe there’s a strong chance that X/Twitter becomes a propaganda arm for Musk/Trump – actually, this would have already occurred.

Musk’s favorable status as Trump’s ally presents Donald to choose to support Zelenskyy and his government, with the blunt approach to leadership, instead arguing over an illusion as previously polluted eyes focus on proven misinformation of the Democratic Party,”

Trump’s Political Stance

In a strand of statements emanating from him, Donald Trump includes Zelenskyy as a despot after the Ukrainian leader responded to Trump’s claim that Europe should cause fines over the Luxembourg NATO Buildups
