BANGKOK – A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck⁤ central Myanmar on Friday, March 28, 2025, causing tremors felt as far‍ away as Thailand and China. In Bangkok, Thailand, a 30-story building collapsed consequently of⁤ the seismic activity.

The United ⁣States Geological Survey (USGS) reported the epicenter ⁣of the quake was approximately 16⁢ kilometers northwest of Sagaing City. The⁣ earthquake occurred at 12:50 p.m.⁤ local time.

The USGS indicated the earthquake’s center was at ⁤a⁢ depth of 10 kilometers. Residents in Bangkok reported widespread ⁣panic as the ground shook.

Tremors where also felt in Yunnan, southwest China. The Beijing Earthquake Agency recorded the shock at magnitude 7.9.

Myanmar’s ruling⁢ military junta reported 144 fatalities and requested international⁣ assistance in the aftermath of the disaster.

A skyscraper under construction in⁢ Bangkok collapsed following the earthquake. Initial reports indicate 43‍ workers were trapped in‍ the wreckage of the 30-story structure.

News agencies reported the building was located in⁤ the⁣ Chatuchak Park area, north of Bangkok. The unfinished building suffered a complete collapse, with twisted⁣ metal beams visible.

Thai emergency authorities stated approximately 50 ⁤people were in the building when it collapsed seconds after⁤ the⁢ earthquake tremors were felt.

The National Institute for Emergency Medicine reported that seven workers‍ were ‍rescued with injuries,while approximately 43 remained trapped.

Thailand’s⁢ Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra convened an ⁣emergency meeting ⁤in response ⁢to the widespread panic caused ⁢by the earthquake.

USGS Reports Shallow Earthquake

The USGS reported the earthquake’s center was located 16 kilometers northwest of Sagaing City, at a depth of 10 kilometers.

The Beijing Earthquake Agency recorded the earthquake’s magnitude at 7.9. As of‍ now, there are no reports of significant ‍damage or⁤ casualties in Yunnan.

Myanmar is located in a ⁤seismically active region.Between 1930 and 1956, six earthquakes of magnitude 7 or greater occurred near the Sagaing Fault, which runs north to south through the center of the country.
