Myanmar Holds First Phase of National Elections Amidst Regional Instability
Myanmar successfully completed the first phase of its national elections on December 28, 2025, with an average voter participation rate exceeding 60%. The elections proceeded without major incidents, though some electronic voting machine (EVM) breakdowns were reported. International observers and members of the foreign diplomatic community were present during the voting process.
the elections, conducted under the mandate of the 2008 Constitution – as were the national elections of 2010, 2015, and 2020, and their associated by-elections – aim to restore stability to Myanmar, which has experienced civil war for the past three years. A key change in this election cycle involves the method of electing representatives for the three levels of Parliament. While the “First Past the Post (FPTP)” system remains in use, adjustments have been made to representation across ethnic groups.
These elections have faced criticism from Western governments and media outlets, which have alleged they are rigged and undemocratic. However, the Chairman of the Election Commission stated the goal is to conduct a credible multi-party democratic election.
The elections occur during a period of heightened regional insecurity. Bangladesh is currently experiencing violence linked to increased radicalization and policy changes following an externally initiated regime change.Bangladesh is planning elections for February 2026. Nepal faces political uncertainty with elections scheduled for March 2026. india-Pakistan relations are at a low point following Operation Sindoor.
Despite these challenges, the first phase of the Myanmar elections offers a potential path toward stability in the region.
