In a groundbreaking discovery, scientists have identified enigmatic “death pools” that destroy all life in an area linked to the biblical narrative of Moses parting the Red Sea. Located just below the sea surface in the Gulf of Aqaba are obscure pools of brine, exerting a lethal impact on any living creature that encounters them.

These natural death traps are ten times as salty as regular seawater, which is about 3.5% salt, and severely lack oxygen, conditions which are quite lethal to most marine life

Researchers from the University of Miami accidentally discovered this while operating a remote underwater vehicle (ROV) as part of a scientific research initiative.

The Quest for Hidden Crystals

The ROV explored the seabed for an extended period of ten hours. Fortunately, just five minutes before the mission concludes, scientists at the University of Miami discovered what became known as “death pools.”

Professor Sam Purkis recounted that “We were very lucky. The discovery came in the last five minutes of the ten-hour ROV dive that we could dedicate to this project.” This timing had a significant impact on the research results. Researchers observed a “desolate seabed thickly draped with mud” as the seabed exploration reached its conclusion.

The Nature of These Dealth Dealing Pools

The pools found 4,000 feet below the surface. These pools mimic the harsh, uninhabitable conditions of early Earth, thus were described as “death pools,” where nothing can survive.

Prof. Purkis said that “Our current understanding is that life originated on Earth in the deep sea, almost certainly in anoxic—without oxygen—conditions. Deep-sea brine pools are a great analog for the early Earth and, despite being devoid of oxygen and hypersaline, are teeming with a rich community of so-called ‘extremophile’ microbes.”

Investigating Local Marine Life

The Gulf of Aqaba, actually a submerged rift valley similar to the Great Rift Valley in California, is also relatively less researched, because of its volcanic and free ein modern day activities aggravating.

By carefully examining the undisturbed sediment, scientists are able to gain insights into the region’s geological history, including reports of earthquakes, tsunamis, flash floods.
