Mysterious Iron Bar Discovered in Ring Nebula Stumps Astronomers

Un equipo de astrónomos europeos, liderados por investigadores del University College de Londres y la Universidad de Cardiff, acaba de descubrir la misteriosa estructura que aparece en la fotografía de arriba. Aún no saben exactamente lo que es, ni por qué está ahí, pero está formada por átomos de hierro y tiene una masa similar a la de Marte. Y, sobre todo, absolutamente nadie había notado su presencia hasta ahora.
La Nebulosa del Anillo (también conocida como Messier 57 o NGC 6720) es sin duda uno de los objetos más y mejor observados del firmamento. What is the Ring Nebula?
The Ring Nebula is a planetary nebula, representing the remnants of a dying star similar to our Sun, discovered in 1779 by French astronomer Charles Messier.
Planetary nebulae aren’t related to planets; the name comes from their round,planet-like appearance through early telescopes. They form when a Sun-like star exhausts its nuclear fuel and sheds its outer layers into space. This expelled gas is then ionized by the hot core of the star, creating a glowing shell. The Ring Nebula, formally cataloged as M57, is located in the constellation Lyra.
Recent observations using the WEAVE instrument on the William Herschel Telescope have provided a detailed chemical map of the nebula, revealing a previously unseen bar-shaped structure at its center. According to Roger Wesson, “WEAVE has allowed us to see it in a fully new way.” This detailed mapping was achieved by obtaining a complete and continuous chemical map, allowing the iron bar to become visible. The Fate of the Sun
The Ring Nebula provides a glimpse into the future of our own Sun. Approximately 4,000 years ago,the star at the center of the Ring Nebula was in a similar stage of evolution to where our Sun will be in billions of years.
As stars like our Sun age, they expand into red giants, eventually shedding their outer layers. The remaining core collapses into a white dwarf, a small, dense remnant that slowly cools over trillions of years. The ejected material forms the gorgeous, expanding nebula we observe. The Sun’s eventual planetary nebula will likely be different in shape and composition due to its unique characteristics, but the essential process will be the same.
