Mysterious Illness Claims Dozens of Lives in Congo
Panzi, Democratic Republic of Congo – A deadly, unidentified illness has swept through the Panzi region of the Democratic Republic of Congo, claiming at least 27 lives in just over a month. Health officials are scrambling to contain the outbreak, which has left residents fearful and authorities urging caution.
The illness, characterized by fever, headaches, and cough, has affected people of all ages, including children. The outbreak,first detected on October 24th,has overwhelmed the limited healthcare facilities in the remote region,located roughly 435 miles southeast of the capital,Kinshasa.
“An unknown public health event” has “already caused the deaths of 27 people out of a total of 382 people affected,” according to a report released by the National Institute of Public Health. Though, local authorities believe the death toll could be substantially higher.
“Civil society and the head doctor of the Panzi health zone have reported the loss of 67 lives,” said Apollinaire Yumba, the provincial health minister.
