A 72-year-old surfer is being sought after saving a man, identified as Grace, who suffered a⁢ severe spinal⁢ injury while surfing near Encinitas, California. According to Surfer ⁢ magazine, Grace was riding smaller waves ‍when⁤ he was forcefully ‍pushed into the ocean floor, resulting in a ‍broken neck (two fractured vertebrae) and head ⁤injuries.

The impact left Grace face down and unable to move. A surfer​ nearby⁤ quickly intervened, pulling⁤ Grace to shore before ⁤Encinitas lifeguards arrived to ⁤provide emergency medical care. Grace was hospitalized over the weekend and returned home to ⁤Colorado on Tuesday, attributing his⁢ survival to the quick actions of‌ the unidentified rescuer.

Lifeguard Account

Encinitas lifeguard Tanner Fritts confirmed the details of the rescue. ⁣ fritts​ stated that he and his team observed⁣ the surfer pulling ⁤Grace from the water. According to​ Surfer, Fritts​ noted Grace had visible ⁣injuries to ⁣his nose, forehead, and chin and was in considerable pain ⁢but conscious.

Fritts added that the rescuer “kinda just stepped⁣ away” after ​ensuring grace was in the hands of the​ lifeguards, and he did not have the possibility⁣ to speak with him or obtain his name.
