A 72-year-old surfer is being sought after saving a man, identified as Grace, who suffered a severe spinal injury while surfing near Encinitas, California. According to Surfer magazine, Grace was riding smaller waves when he was forcefully pushed into the ocean floor, resulting in a broken neck (two fractured vertebrae) and head injuries.
The impact left Grace face down and unable to move. A surfer nearby quickly intervened, pulling Grace to shore before Encinitas lifeguards arrived to provide emergency medical care. Grace was hospitalized over the weekend and returned home to Colorado on Tuesday, attributing his survival to the quick actions of the unidentified rescuer.
Lifeguard Account
Encinitas lifeguard Tanner Fritts confirmed the details of the rescue. fritts stated that he and his team observed the surfer pulling Grace from the water. According to Surfer, Fritts noted Grace had visible injuries to his nose, forehead, and chin and was in considerable pain but conscious.
Fritts added that the rescuer “kinda just stepped away” after ensuring grace was in the hands of the lifeguards, and he did not have the possibility to speak with him or obtain his name.

Grace is actively seeking to personally thank the surfer who saved his life. The community is rallying to identify the anonymous hero. Anyone with data about the surfer is encouraged to come forward.
