Pakistan Freezes Malik Riaz Properties in Land dispute
Updated June 21, 2025
Pakistan’s National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has issued a 15-day freezing order on numerous properties belonging to property tycoon Malik Riaz, his son Ahmed ali Riaz, and bahria Town Pvt Ltd. The action targets 457 properties nationwide and is connected to an ongoing reference against Riaz and others.
This advancement compounds NAB’s previous actions against Riaz, who is already under scrutiny in the Al qadir Trust Case involving £190 million. The order, dated June 19, freezes properties under Section 12 and Section 34A of the National Accountability Ordinance (NAO), 1999.
The order alleges that the ”accused persons,” acting in collusion, illegally seized 16,896 acres of government land in the Malir district of Karachi, violating Section 9A of the NAO. Among the frozen assets are five Bahria Town properties in DHA Rawalpindi, two properties owned by Ahmed Ali Riaz in Islamabad, and 18 Bahria Town properties also in Islamabad, totaling 25 properties.
Two properties belonging to Riaz’s son-in-law, Zain Malik, are also affected by the order.
While the order is initially for 15 days, the document states it will remain in effect pending adjudication by the accountability court, as per a Supreme court of Pakistan judgment.
Earlier in June,an accountability court issued non-bailable warrants for the arrest of Malik Riaz, his son,and others in connection with the Bahria Town Karachi (BTK) land grab case. NAB filed a reference months prior, accusing Bahria Town owners, senior PPP leaders, and government officials of illegally converting and transferring government land for the BTK project.
What’s next
The accountability court will now adjudicate on the freezing order, possibly leading to further legal action and scrutiny of Bahria Town’s land acquisition practices.
