Two Brothers⁤ Dead After Nablus Raid ⁣Amid West ​Bank Violence

NABLUS,West Bank ⁤— An ⁣Israeli military raid in Nablus ​Tuesday resulted in the deaths of two Palestinian brothers. Nidal Umairah,‌ 40, and⁣ his brother Khaled,⁢ 35, died during the incursion, which locals ‍described as⁣ the largest⁣ in two years.

According to witnesses, Nidal Umairah, wearing a red⁢ cap, approached ‍Israeli soldiers ‌in Nablus’s old⁣ city unarmed, seemingly to speak⁢ with them. Soldiers ⁤then shoved and kicked⁢ him before khaled attempted to intervene. Gunfire ⁤erupted, ⁣leaving both brothers⁢ dead.

Ghassan hamdan, director of the​ Palestinian medical Relief Society in Nablus, said at least a dozen soldiers fired automatic weapons at the men. Medics attempting to treat the wounded were also fired upon, Hamdan said.

Hamza Abu Hajar, a paramedic, reported that Nidal Umairah⁤ was trying ⁢to ⁤reach his home ‌to evacuate his family. ​Abu Hajar said Umairah lifted his shirt to show he was⁢ unarmed before‌ the shooting began.

The Israeli army stated its forces acted in self-defense after one of ‍the brothers tried to seize a ‍soldier’s weapon. Thay reported four soldiers were injured.

The Nablus raid, lasting over 24 hours, reflects increasing Israeli‌ military activity in the West Bank. Since october‍ 2023, violence has‌ escalated, with at ‌least 930 Palestinians killed, 24 from Nablus, according to the United nations​ Office for the Coordination of​ Humanitarian Affairs.
