Nadia López Named New Head of Educational Materials After Marx Arriaga’s Dismissal from SEP

Mexico’s Secretariat of Public Education (SEP) has undergone a significant leadership change, replacing Marx Arriaga Navarro, the Director General of Educational Materials, with poet and pedagogue Nadia López García. The move, announced on February 16th, follows months of controversy surrounding Arriaga’s overhaul of the nation’s school textbooks and reportedly stemmed from disagreements over incorporating greater representation of women in historical narratives.

The dismissal, and the manner in which it unfolded, has been particularly fraught. Reports indicate Arriaga resisted leaving his post at SEP headquarters on February 13th, leading to a tense standoff with security personnel. He subsequently announced plans to publicly denounce what he characterized as “institutional violence” against him.

President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed the decision to remove Arriaga was directly linked to his unwillingness to revise the textbooks to include more prominent roles for women in history. “We agreed that women should be incorporated into the history presented in the textbooks,” Sheinbaum stated. “Marx Arriaga did not agree with the modifications, but the textbooks do not belong to one person.”

The situation escalated after Secretary Mario Delgado attempted to offer Arriaga an alternative position as an ambassador to a Latin American country, an offer Arriaga rejected. Delgado then moved to replace him, ultimately selecting López García.

Nadia López García brings a distinctly different profile to the role. The SEP highlighted her indigenous Oaxacan heritage, noting she speaks both Mixtec and Spanish, and that her upbringing shaped her commitment to education and the preservation of indigenous languages. She is the author of eleven books translated into multiple languages, including English, French, and Arabic, and has received numerous accolades, including the National Youth Award and the Mesoamerican Poetry Prize.

The SEP emphasized that López García’s experience in pedagogical design, teacher training, and promoting literacy will be instrumental in strengthening educational content with a “humanist, inclusive, intercultural, and gender-sensitive approach” aligned with the principles of the Nueva Escuela Mexicana (New Mexican School) initiative.

Arriaga, however, has publicly blamed Noemí Juárez Pérez, the Undersecretary of Basic Education, for his removal, alleging she intends to “change all the books.” He maintained he would not vacate his office until presented with a formal dismissal notice compliant with labor laws, and criticized Delgado’s offer of an ambassadorship, accusing him of acting on behalf of “the powers that be” seeking to undermine the current administration’s agenda.

“He said: ‘What’s happening here is that I’m a scoundrel and I’m acting in my own interest and I received a call from above, from the powers that be in Mexico, and they say they want to see the teaching profession brought to its knees, because we need to do business with it,’” according to reports.

The appointment of López García signals a potential shift in direction for the SEP’s educational materials. While Arriaga’s tenure was marked by sweeping changes and ideological debate, López García’s background suggests a focus on inclusivity, cultural sensitivity, and pedagogical expertise. Her experience working with indigenous languages and communities could also lead to a greater emphasis on multicultural education within the national curriculum.

The controversy surrounding Arriaga’s departure underscores the ongoing tensions within Mexico’s education system. The debate over textbook content reflects broader ideological divisions and raises questions about the role of education in shaping national identity and values. López García now faces the challenge of navigating these complexities while implementing a new vision for educational materials that addresses the concerns of diverse stakeholders.

The immediate task for López García will be overseeing the coordination and design of the free textbooks, a project that has become a focal point of national debate.
