A staff‍ member for U.S. Representative Jerry Nadler, a New York Democrat, was briefly handcuffed and detained by Department of Homeland Security (DHS) police in Nadler’s Manhattan office Wednesday, triggering a clash ‍over ‍immigration enforcement and accusations of⁢ political intimidation. ⁣The incident unfolded one floor above a federal immigration court.

According to Nadler’s chief of⁢ staff,Robert Gottheim, the confrontation stemmed from the congressman’s team witnessing DHS ‍agents detaining migrants. Staff then invited immigration⁢ advocates, who had also observed the ‍detentions,⁤ into Nadler’s office. The federal agents reportedly accused Nadler’s team of⁢ “harboring rioters,” a claim the DHS statement later⁣ omitted.

The video of the incident shows DHS officers entering Nadler’s district office. A staff member is heard asking for a ‍warrant, which the agent said was not required. Another agent ⁢is heard telling the aide not to resist. The ⁢aide was not charged⁢ with‍ any crime.

Nadler, in an interview, condemned the Trump ⁣governance’s actions. He characterized the behavior as ⁢”fascist” and accused⁤ the administration of employing ⁤”totalitarian⁢ or even authoritarian practices.”

DHS, ⁢in its statement,⁣ said agents entered Nadler’s office ⁢due to concerns about protesters and the safety of his staff, a different justification ⁣from the agents’‍ initial claim.

Two immigration advocates, who requested anonymity, said they were advising migrants at the courthouse when plainclothes ICE officers questioned people there for court ⁢appearances. ⁢They said they were⁢ threatened with arrest for loitering before being invited to Nadler’s office.

What’s⁢ next

The incident is highly likely to fuel further scrutiny of immigration enforcement tactics and increase political tensions between Democrats and the Trump administration.
