Family, friends, and former colleagues gathered in Tokyo on Sunday to bid farewell to Shigeo Nagashima, the Japanese baseball legend who died Tuesday at 89. Ninety-six people attended the funeral for the man known as “Mr. Professional Baseball.”
Nagashima,a celebrated hitter and former manager for the Yomiuri giants,was remembered fondly. The altar featured orange flowers, a team color, along with a bat and jersey.
Sadaharu Oh, who played alongside Nagashima and later managed the Giants, delivered a memorial address. He currently chairs the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks.
hideki Matsui, another former Giants slugger who also played for the New York Yankees, reflected on Nagashima’s coaching.
Nagashima’s second daughter, Mina, expressed hope that people would remember her father on sunny days.
