The search for Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie, has entered a critical phase as investigators grapple with a growing sense that crucial leads may be dwindling. February 1st marked the beginning of the third week since Guthrie disappeared from her Tucson, Arizona home, prompting a widening investigation that now extends to Mexico and the application of advanced forensic techniques.

While authorities have questioned two individuals since Guthrie’s abduction, both were released without charge, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department maintains the case remains active, having received over 20,000 tips from the public, but the investigation is now pursuing multiple avenues simultaneously.

Expanding the Search to Mexico

Given Tucson’s proximity to the U.S.-Mexico border, law enforcement officials have contacted their counterparts in Mexico to explore all possibilities. Sources within the investigation, speaking on condition of anonymity, emphasized that this outreach is a precautionary measure to exhaust all potential leads, despite a current lack of evidence suggesting Guthrie or her abductors crossed the border. The Guthrie residence is located approximately an hour’s drive from the international boundary.

DNA Analysis and Genetic Genealogy

Initial analysis of DNA recovered from a glove found two miles from Guthrie’s home has yielded no matches in the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS), the national DNA database used by law enforcement. Biological evidence collected from within Guthrie’s home is also undergoing testing, but has similarly failed to produce a CODIS match, according to Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos.

In the absence of a direct DNA match, investigators are now employing genetic genealogy – a technique that has gained prominence in recent years for solving cold cases. This involves comparing DNA samples to publicly available databases used for ancestry research, in an attempt to identify distant relatives and build a family tree that could lead to a suspect.

CeCe Moore, a genetic genealogist and co-founder of DNA Justice, explained the potential of this approach. “If they actually have the suspect’s DNA – Nancy’s kidnapper’s DNA – he will be identified through genetic genealogy,” Moore stated. “It’s just a matter of time.”

However, access to these databases is limited. While databases like GEDmatch, FamilyTreeDNA, and DNA Justice are open to law enforcement use, they contain fewer than 2 million genetic profiles collectively, compared to the tens of millions held by commercial companies like Ancestry.com, 23andMe, and MyHeritage, which require court orders to release data.

The Role of Technology and Public Appeals

Authorities are also leveraging technology to aid in the search. Parsons Corp has deployed BlueFly units – Bluetooth and Wi-Fi sensors used for search and rescue operations – at the request of the Pima County Sheriff’s Department. These units can detect signals emitted by electronic devices, including Guthrie’s pacemaker, potentially providing clues to her location.

An anonymous donor has contributed $100,000 to 88-CRIME, a local tip line, adding to the $100,000 reward already offered by the FBI for information leading to Guthrie’s arrest. Sheriff Nanos has sought to reassure the public that the investigation is far from stalled, stating, “as long as we have the ability to chase a lead, it’s not cold.”

Focus on Video Evidence

Investigators are heavily focused on video footage recovered from Guthrie’s Nest doorbell camera. The video depicts a masked individual approaching her home on February 1st at 1:47 a.m. The suspect, described as approximately 5 feet 9 to 5 feet 10 inches tall with an average build, is seen wearing a balaclava, gloves, and a black 25-liter Ozark Trail Hiker Pack backpack, available for purchase at Walmart. The suspect also appears to be carrying a holstered handgun.

The individual attempts to obscure the camera lens with their hand and then with foliage. The FBI is working with Walmart to identify the purchaser of the backpack and is canvassing local gun shops, showing the video footage in an effort to identify the suspect.

Experts believe that public recognition of the suspect in the video is currently the most promising avenue for a swift resolution to the case. The technology employed in the search, combined with the ongoing DNA analysis and the expanded investigation into Mexico, represents a multi-pronged effort to locate Nancy Guthrie and bring those responsible for her disappearance to justice.
