Nanobubble Water Treatment: Technology & Benefits
Nanobubble Technology Revolutionizes Renewable Gas, Oil, and Water Treatment
Nanobubble (NB) technology, spearheaded by Professor English and his colleagues, is demonstrating transformative potential across critical industrial sectors, including renewable gas, oil and fuels, and water treatment. Recent advancements, supported by European Research Council (ERC) and European Innovation Council (EIC) projects, have propelled this technology from pilot trials to robust industrial applications, promising notable efficiency gains and environmental benefits.
Powering the renewable Gas Revolution with Nanobubbles
The renewable gas industry, especially biogas production, faces numerous water-treatment challenges. Nanobubbles are emerging as a key solution, offering a low-energy, membrane-free method for purifying raw biogas.
Enhancing Biogas Purity and Efficiency
A notable application involves using nanobubbles to directly clean raw biogas. In this process, water absorbs methane and hydrogen sulfide preferentially from the biogas stream, resulting in a significantly purer methane output. This “water washing” method, enhanced by electric-field NB generation, achieves a lower-energy upgrade of biogas without the need for traditional membranes. Moreover, air and CO2 nanobubbles have proven effective in treating digestate water, facilitating redox manipulation, neutralizing odors, and producing valuable residual organic fertilizer material. These applications highlight the versatility of NB technology in optimizing the biogas value chain.
Nanobubbles Drive Progress in fuel and Oil Sectors
The fuel and oil industries are also witnessing significant progress with nanobubble technology, particularly through the innovative applications developed by AquaB. Pilot trials have showcased promising results in various upstream, midstream, and downstream operations.
Optimizing Oil Recovery and Water Management
In the midstream sector, aquab’s NB generators have demonstrated excellent performance in core-flood tests, leading to shifts in surface tension and improved oil-water separations. this advancement significantly reduces the reliance on surfactants, a critical factor for operational efficiency. For upstream operations, nanobubble-based fracking for Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) has shown remarkable efficacy. The enhanced frac-water penetration into rock-sediment matrices dislodges pore-intercalated hydrocarbons, leading to a faster and greater release of oil.
Moreover, nanobubble technology offers a enduring solution for treating “produced water” – the substantial wastewater generated during oil extraction. CO2 nanobubbles effectively treat this produced water by promoting the mass formation and subsequent precipitation of carbonates,a process that facilitates large-scale desalting of the wastewater.
Improving Fuel Combustion Efficiency
Downstream operations have also benefited from nanobubble technology. The combustion of petrol and diesel aerated with nanobubbles in internal combustion engines (ICEs) has resulted in notable efficiency improvements. Studies indicate gains of 14% for petrol and 16% for diesel, coupled with a significant reduction in emissions. This enhancement in fuel efficiency and emission control underscores the environmental and economic advantages of NB integration.
outlook: Electric Dreams and a Sustainable Future
with the successful completion of TRL-8 pilot trials and ongoing exploration through ERC and EIC projects, Professor English and his team have solidified robust industrial progress in the gas, oil, fuels, and water treatment sectors. AquaB’s integration of the latest AI models and millifluidic designs, developed during the EIC AQUA-BUBBLES project, has led to the creation of smarter, more efficient TRL-9 CE-marked and ISO-certified NB generators. These advanced generators are capable of spanning a wide flowrate range, from sub-litres to thousands of litres per minute.
The prospect of passive NB generation, powered by solar-battery systems and deployable on floating or shore-mounted platforms in large water bodies, paints a bright future for AquaB. The company is poised to offer a comprehensive product range, catering to both domestic and industrial scales, as it continues its mission to address pressing global challenges through innovative nanobubble solutions.
