Political Row Erupts in India Over Former Army Chief’s Unpublished Memoir

February 10, 2026 – A political controversy has erupted in India following attempts by opposition leader Rahul Gandhi to cite excerpts from the unpublished memoir of former Army Chief General Manoj Mukund Naravane. The book, titled “Four Stars of Destiny,” reportedly details events surrounding the 2020 military standoff with China and has been awaiting government clearance since 2024.

The controversy unfolded in the Indian Parliament when Gandhi attempted to read passages from the memoir, alleging failures in leadership and a lack of clear direction from top political leaders during the 2020 border clashes. According to reports, the book claims that when Chinese tanks advanced towards Indian positions, Naravane was instructed “to do what he deemed appropriate.”

The 2020 standoff resulted in the deaths of twenty Indian soldiers and at least four Chinese troops in the Galwan river valley in Ladakh, marking the first fatal confrontation between the two nations since 1975. Tensions began to ease in 2024 after years of both military and diplomatic negotiations, culminating in agreements for disengagement in affected border areas.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s BJP party has accused Gandhi of violating parliamentary rules and insulting Indian soldiers by referencing an unpublished manuscript. Naravane has not yet publicly commented on the escalating situation.

The contents of the memoir first gained public attention over the weekend after excerpts were published by The Caravan magazine. The BBC has stated it has not independently verified the excerpts and has reached out to both Naravane and his publisher, Penguin Random House, for comment.

The controversy surrounding “Four Stars of Destiny” has reopened debate about civil-military relations in India and the extent to which retired military commanders should be permitted to publicly discuss sensitive events that occurred during their time in service. The Wire reports that speculation regarding the circumstances that led to the PLA’s ingress into eastern Ladakh in May 2020 has lingered, but was largely muted in the immediate aftermath of the confrontation.

The situation is further complicated by questions surrounding the manuscript’s status, and publication. India Today reported that Penguin Random House issued a clarification stating that the pre-order link was mistakenly activated and that the book remains unpublished. A subsequent clarification was issued within 24 hours reiterating this point.

Delhi Police have filed a First Information Report (FIR) regarding the matter, according to thehindu.com, following confirmation from Naravane that the memoir is, as yet, unpublished. This suggests an investigation into how excerpts of the book became public and the potential implications for national security.

The allegations within the memoir, if verified, raise questions about the decision-making processes during a critical period in India-China relations. The book’s delayed clearance and the ensuing political fallout highlight the sensitivity surrounding discussions of border security and military strategy in India.
