NASA has launched the Artemis II mission, marking the first time humans have departed Earth orbit since 1972. The mission, which began on April 1, 2026, is a 10-day test flight designed to evaluate the Orion spacecraft’s ability to sustain a crew in deep space, serving as a critical step toward establishing a long-term human presence on the Moon and eventually sending crews to Mars.

The crew consists of NASA astronauts Commander Reid Wiseman, Pilot Victor Glover, and Mission Specialist Christina Koch, alongside Canadian Space Agency astronaut Mission Specialist Jeremy Hansen.

Following the launch, the spacecraft performed a series of critical orbital adjustments. On April 2, 2026, Orion completed a perigee raise burn, which involved igniting the service module’s main engine for 43 seconds. This maneuver raised the lowest point of the spacecraft’s orbit and refined its trajectory to align with the path to the Moon.

Later on April 2, 2026, the spacecraft executed the translunar injection burn. This approximately six-minute firing of the service module engine accelerated Orion to break free of Earth’s orbit and enter an outbound trajectory toward the Moon.
