Rolling through an ancient channel on Mount Sharp called Gediz Vallis, NASA’s Curiosity rover has discovered pure elemental sulfur crystals hidden inside a broken rock. Reported by VICE and ScienceAlert, the find marks the first time native sulfur has ever been confirmed on the red planet.
Sulfur is far from unfamiliar on Mars. For years, Curiosity has charted regions packed with sulfate minerals, which form when sulfur mixes with water and eventually dries out. Yet encountering pure elemental sulfur—also known as brimstone—demands a very specific set of geological conditions. Researchers simply did not expect those conditions to exist in that particular sector of Gale Crater.
A Desert Oasis of Pale Rocks
The surprise emerged as the rover traversed the Gediz Vallis Channel, a jagged scar carved long ago by debris flows running down the flanks of Mount Sharp. Following the accidental crush, photographs beamed back to Earth revealed that the surrounding area is dotted with similar pale rocks. The scatter suggests that native sulfur may be distributed across the Martian landscape.

Modelling the Martian Mystery
Back on Earth, researchers are running models to solve the puzzle. They are trying to determine how a cold, dry planet could store pockets of brimstone near its surface.

With final images of the striking sulfur field already captured, the rover has rolled on. Curiosity has departed the edge of the channel and is currently heading toward its next target on Mount Sharp.
Clues to Ancient Chemistry and Serendipity
While the discovery does not serve as proof of past life, it adds a new piece to the inventory of what Mars once possessed. According to VICE, sulfur remains essential for life as we know it, utilized by organisms on Earth to build proteins and amino acids. This newly confirmed deposit joins previous local confirmations of water and complex chemistry.
The milestone also highlights the element of chance in planetary exploration. If Curiosity had rolled along a slightly different path, the yellow crystals might have remained permanently sealed inside the stone, leaving scientists unaware of the deposit.
