NASA is testing an AI-powered medical diagnostic tool called the Crew Medical Officer Digital Assistant (CMO-DA) to help astronauts treat illnesses during deep-space missions, where delays in communication with Earth could make real-time medical advice impossible. According to Red Hat, CMO-DA uses large language models (LLMs) for complex medical reasoning and vision-language models (VLMs) for image-based symptom analysis. This approach allows the system to process both types of data without needing a massive infrastructure footprint, making it suitable for deployment on spacecraft where bandwidth and computational resources are limited. The tool was initially a proof of concept but has since transitioned from a cloud-dependent model to a fully disconnected edge deployment, ensuring it can operate independently in space.

The need for such a system became clearer earlier this year when NASA brought the Crew-11 mission back to Earth early due to a medical concern. As missions extend to the Moon, Mars, and beyond, astronauts may face scenarios where an early return is impractical, and communication delays—up to 22 minutes one-way to Mars—could prevent real-time consultations with doctors on Earth. HPE’s Spaceborne Computer, now in its third iteration aboard the ISS, is built from off-the-shelf components and is capable of handling AI and machine learning workloads.
