NASA and Katalyst Space announced that the LINK commercial spacecraft will no longer capture or boost the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory to a higher altitude, according to an official NASA release. An ongoing commercial spacecraft attitude control issue prevented the planned rescue mission, though the spacecraft will still attempt to conduct rendezvous and proximity operations to demonstrate key in-space servicing capabilities.

Mission Alterations Following Attitude Control Issues

The rescue mission faced operational hurdles after the LINK spacecraft experienced attitude control issues following its July 3 launch. According to NASA and Katalyst Space, the technical complications mean LINK cannot capture the aging space telescope to extend its operational science lifespan. Despite this shift, the LINK spacecraft will still proceed with rendezvous and proximity operations with Swift to gather critical technical data. NASA should be willing to move quickly and take smart risks when the potential return is worth it, and that is exactly what we did with this mission, NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman stated in the agency release. This is not the outcome we were working toward, but it does not change why this mission was worth attempting. Isaacman noted that the team moved rapidly to give Swift an opportunity to continue science operations while advancing foundational capabilities for future American satellite servicing missions.

Origins of the Rapidly Developed Swift Boost Mission

Launched in 2004 to study gamma-ray bursts and other cosmic events, the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory was originally designed for a two-year prime mission. After 21 years of active science operations, the telescope’s low Earth orbit began rapidly decaying due to increased solar activity. In response, NASA awarded a contract to Katalyst Space in September 2025 to develop a robotic servicing mission for Swift on an accelerated timeline driven by the Sun’s activity. We knew this was a high-risk, high-reward mission – a first-of-its kind attempt, developed on an unprecedented timeline driven by the Sun’s activity, said Shawn Domagal-Goldman, director, Astrophysics Division, NASA Headquarters. We were all hoping for more science from Swift. But we knew the takeaways from this mission would be worthwhile either way. The LINK spacecraft launched on a Northrop Grumman Pegasus XL rocket from Kwajalein Atoll in the South Pacific Ocean, successfully establishing initial communications before encountering attitude control complications during in-orbit checkouts.

Future Outlook for Swift and Commercial Servicing

Without a successful orbital boost, NASA anticipates that the Swift observatory is likely to re-enter Earth’s atmosphere later this year. As part of its end-of-life planning, the agency plans to prioritize identifying new options to react rapidly to cosmic events, utilizing current missions to bridge any operational gaps. Meanwhile, NASA and Katalyst are working closely to assess next steps for the impending rendezvous attempt to extract maximum data from the hardware. Building, testing, and operating this mission has already strengthened America’s space industry pipeline, advancing in-space servicing capabilities in completely new ways, Domagal-Goldman stated, emphasizing that NASA remains committed to supporting commercial vendors as they take on difficult tasks. Agency officials intend to apply lessons learned from LINK’s upcoming proximity operations directly to subsequent commercial satellite servicing missions.
