Nate White, a sophomore football player at South Dakota State University, died early Wednesday at the age of 20. The university announced his passing, but⁣ did not release a cause of death.

White transferred to South Dakota State in January ⁣after‍ two seasons with the Wisconsin Badgers. He ⁣was expected to contribute to the South Dakota State offense this upcoming 2025 season.

“News⁤ of Nate White’s tragic passing has been sad and challenging to comprehend for all of our Wisconsin Badger football family,” Wisconsin coach Luke Fickell said. “We remember Nate as a friend and teammate and we stand⁢ in support of Nate’s family and loved ones.”

Recruiting Profile

White, a Milwaukee King High School graduate, was a three-star prospect in the 2023 class. He was ranked as the No. 55 running back nationally and the top prospect in Wisconsin. Before committing to Wisconsin, White ‍received offers from Iowa State, Kansas, minnesota, ⁢Purdue,⁣ and Vanderbilt.

High School⁤ Career

White earned second-team all-state honors from the ‍Associated Press in ⁣2022. That year, he rushed for 1,345 yards and 26 touchdowns.⁣ As a senior, he also received conference MVP and offensive player of the year awards.

During his junior year, ⁤white played quarterback, rushing ⁣for 1,163 yards and 22 touchdowns in nine games. He was named conference offensive player of the year.
