Nathan Haas Announces Retirement from Racing After Ranxo Gravel
Australian professional cyclist Nathan Haas has announced his retirement from racing after competing in the Ranxo Gravel event on Sunday. He shared his feelings in a social media post, stating he feels he has “extracted everything” he coudl from cycling in terms of learning and personal growth.
Haas finished his career with the Ranxo Gravel race, following a nearly four-year transition from WorldTour road racing to gravel. He didn’t contend for the win at the recent Gravel Earth Series race in ponts, Spain, which was won by wout Alleman, nor did he achieve a podium finish in the overall series, won by Magnus Bak Klaris. Though, he emphasized that results weren’t the primary focus, but rather the enjoyment and self-discovery the sport provided.
The veteran rider began his career with mountain biking before moving to road racing as a teenager. he achieved early success with wins at the Japan Cup Road Race and Herald Sun Tour, and spent 10 seasons at the worldtour level, most recently with Cofidis in 2021. His move to gravel was inspired by Lachlan Morton and the disruption to the traditional racing calendar caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Haas has also been a columnist for Cyclingnews, sharing his insights on the sport.
