A ‌Department of Homeland Security (DHS) memo ⁣reveals that ⁣the ​agency is seeking⁣ to utilize National Guard troops for immigration enforcement activities. These activities could include “night⁣ operations and rural interdiction,” as well as ⁣”guard duty and riot control” within immigrant detention facilities. The potential deployment highlights the increasing ⁢role of the National Guard in border security and immigration control.

The May 9 memo from DHS Executive Secretary ‌Andrew whitaker outlines the need for up to 3,500 guard ‍personnel to “Attempt to Locate — Fugitives.” An additional​ 2,500 troops would provide detention support. The request for ‌National Guard assistance comes three weeks‌ after ⁤DHS requested 20,000 troops.

According to the memo, as many as 10,000 troops could be assigned to transportation support, including ⁤moving detainees and ​unaccompanied children between states.Another 1,000 troops could be used for document translation and interview assistance, ⁢further expanding the national Guard’s ⁢involvement in ‌immigration processes.
