San Diego – James Wood showcased his ⁤burgeoning role as a‌ key​ player for the Washington Nationals, ​delivering a ​three-run⁤ home run ⁤and four RBIs in‍ their 10-6 victory ‍against the San Diego‍ padres on Monday. The‍ win marked Washington’s first triumph over San Diego since June 25, 2023.

Wood’s performance underscores his potential All-Star caliber season.⁤ He currently boasts a .284 average⁤ with 22 home ⁢runs and 61 RBIs. ⁤His current‌ trajectory‍ projects him to hit​ 45⁣ home runs and approach 125 RBIs, alongside 20 stolen bases‍ and 100 walks.

The Nationals’ manager, Dave Martinez, and Wood’s ​teammates are advocating for his inclusion in the Home‍ Run Derby in Atlanta⁣ next month.

“It’s been brought up,” Wood said. “We’ll see.⁣ That’d be cool​ if I’m invited. So let’s try to get that first.”

However, the victory⁤ was tempered by catcher Keibert Ruiz’s departure in the fourth ⁢inning after being struck ‍by a foul ball in⁢ the dugout.

Martinez described the incident as “scary” for him and the⁢ players.

“He had a nice lump on his head,” Martinez said of Ruiz. “They were asking questions and he was answering correctly. Hopefully, he’s OK because​ he wants to play every‍ day.”

If Ruiz is cleared to play, he will catch for‍ Trevor ⁤Williams​ (3-8, 5.54 ERA), who is scheduled to start for Washington. ‌Williams last pitched on⁤ Thursday, allowing two runs on eight ⁣hits‍ in 5 1/3 innings⁢ against the Colorado Rockies.

San Diego will counter⁢ with rookie right-hander Ryan Bergert ‍(1-0, 1.88 ERA). bergert’s last ⁣outing was Thursday, where he pitched 4 2/3 ⁣scoreless innings against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Padres manager Mike​ Shildt highlighted Bryan Hoeing’s​ accomplished ​season ⁣debut after recovering from a shoulder strain. “The radiant spot‌ was Hoeing,” Shildt‌ said. “It’s‍ nice to get him ‌back.”
