NATO Chief Warns of Major War With Russia Without Increased Defense Spending
NATO Chief Warns: west Falling Behind in Arms Race Against Russia, China
Brussels, Belgium – NATO secretary General Jens Stoltenberg issued a stark warning this week, stating that the West is falling behind in the global arms race against Russia, China, North Korea, and Iran. While not technically at war, Stoltenberg emphasized that the current geopolitical climate is far from peaceful.
“Russia, China, as well as North Korea and Iran are actively working too weaken North America and Europe,” Stoltenberg declared. “We are not at war. But we are certainly not at peace.”
Stoltenberg’s comments come ahead of a crucial NATO summit in The Hague this June, where member states are expected to discuss setting a new defense spending target. He stressed the urgency of collective investment in defense, arguing that inaction now will lead to far greater costs in the future.
“During the Cold War, Europeans spent considerably more than three percent of their GDP on defense. With that mindset, we won the Cold War,” Stoltenberg reminded NATO members, urging citizens to pressure their leaders to make the right decisions.
Despite several initiatives aimed at boosting European arms production, Stoltenberg acknowledged that Western efforts to strengthen military capabilities are lagging behind the rapid advancements of Russia and China.
“We are not where we want to be,” Stoltenberg admitted, warning that Europe risks falling behind, a scenario he deemed “extremely dangerous.” He called for closer government cooperation and urged the implementation of “large orders and long-term contracts.”
Stoltenberg also emphasized the need for the defense industry to “embrace innovation and take risks,” advocating for the introduction of additional shifts and production lines. He criticized the current state of the European defense sector, describing it as “too small, too fragmented, and too slow.”
