A Flock of Birds Triggers Emergency Air Defense Protocols

The perceived threat that led to the emergency response and flight suspensions was ultimately identified as a flock of birds, according to Lithuania’s National Crisis Management Centre.

The air alert forced the suspension of all flight operations at the capital’s airport, leaving travelers grounded while security measures were enacted.

Lithuania’s National Crisis Management Centre explained in a public statement that the initial radar readings triggered the response because marks left by birds and drones can appear similar on surveillance equipment. A NATO fighter jet was summoned from northern Lithuania, where the Italian air force is stationed as part of the NATO Baltic Air Defence mission, to intercept what was initially suspected to be a drone.

Vilnius International Airport Reopens Within 38 Minutes

The emergency protocols were resolved quickly once the military pilot reached the airspace and confirmed the true nature of the radar targets. The air alert was lifted, and Vilnius International Airport reopened within 38 minutes of the initial closure.

Text message alerts had been dispatched to residents across the area to warn them of the potential airspace breach, while local authorities monitored the situation.

Vilnius Marathon Proceeds Without Interruption

The false alarm coincided with the Vilnius marathon, which was underway at the time of the incident.

Race organizers confirmed that the marathon was not interrupted by the air alert or the fighter jet deployment overhead, allowing the athletic event to proceed as scheduled.

Heightened Regional Tensions and Recent Drone Incursions

The scramble occurred against a backdrop of heightened regional tensions involving uncrewed aerial vehicles and European airspace security.

According to the country’s military, drones aimed at Ukraine have landed in Lithuanian territory in recent weeks. European authorities and intelligence agencies have remained on high alert following multiple cross-border security incidents involving sabotage campaigns and stray munitions across the continent.
