Despite the immense challenges posed by Russia’s ongoing war, Ukraine’s food system has demonstrated remarkable resilience. Recognizing the critical importance of safeguarding food and water supplies, NATO and Ukraine recently convened a workshop in warsaw, Poland, bringing together over 30 experts from eight NATO Allies and Ukraine to share insights and develop crucial recommendations.

The July 2-3 workshop focused on bolstering food and water security in the face of conflict and disruption.Participants delved into key areas including contingency planning,infrastructure protection,and the vital role of public-private partnerships. A central theme was enhancing overall societal resilience related to food and water – a necessity not just for ukraine, but for the entire NATO alliance.
Ukrainian demining experts played a particularly critically important role, sharing their invaluable experience in planning demining operations to restore agricultural lands. This knowledge is critical for rebuilding Ukraine’s agricultural capacity and ensuring future harvests.The workshop served as a platform for exchanging best practices and identifying innovative approaches to mitigate the impact of the war on food production and distribution.
Key Recommendations for Future Planning
The discussions yielded several key recommendations intended to inform future planning for both NATO and Ukraine. These include:
Enhanced Food and Water Contingency Planning: Developing robust plans to address potential disruptions to food and water supplies during times of crisis. Prioritized Infrastructure Protection: Identifying and safeguarding critical infrastructure essential for food production, processing, and transportation.
Strengthened Public-Private Cooperation: Fostering closer collaboration between government agencies and private sector stakeholders to ensure a coordinated response to food security challenges.
Demining Strategies for Agricultural Restoration: Implementing effective demining operations to safely restore agricultural lands and enable farmers to resume production.
