Updated May 11, 2025
Emanuel Navarrete successfully defended his WBO junior lightweight title, achieving a technical decision victory against Charly Suarez at Pechanga Arena in San Diego. The junior lightweight title bout concluded abruptly one second into the eighth round when an accidental headbutt caused a cut above
navarrete’s left eye, preventing him from continuing.
Judges awarded Navarrete the win with scores of 76-75, 77-76, and 77-76. Navarrete demonstrated dominance early, out-landing Suarez in four of the initial five rounds.A
straight right in the first round drew blood from Suarez’s nose, setting the tone for Navarrete’s aggressive combinations and signature uppercuts. Suarez responded by
attempting to close the distance and land his left hand.
The accidental clash of heads occurred at the beginning of the sixth round, resulting in a significant cut over Navarrete’s left eye. Despite initial appearances suggesting a
punch caused the injury, a review confirmed the headbutt.
“I felt good. I felt strong. I felt complete,” Navarrete said.”Sadly, what happened with the head-butt,obviously [the fight] ended like that. But while we were
fighting, I felt good.”
Navarrete struggled with visibility due to the blood flow, allowing Suarez to land several undefended right hands. Although Navarrete’s corner managed the cut effectively, the
ring doctor advised referee Edward Collantes to halt the fight before the eighth round commenced.
“From the first moment of the impact, I knew it was a head-butt,” Navarrete said. “It split my eyebrow completely, and from the first moment I noticed it was a
head-butt.”
Navarrete (40-2-1, 32 KOs) holds titles in the junior featherweight, featherweight, and junior lightweight divisions. His WBO junior lightweight belt was claimed in February
2023 with a TKO victory over Liam Wilson. After three title defenses, Navarrete moved to lightweight, where he suffered a split decision loss to Denys Berinchyk. He then
returned to junior lightweight, defeating Oscar Valdez in December.
what’s next
Navarrete’s struggle with weight could prompt a return to the lightweight division. He stated that his immediate focus is on recovering from the cut and then deciding whether
to remain at 130 pounds or attempt another run at 135 pounds.
In the co-main event, Raymond Muratalla (23-0, 17 KOs) secured the vacant IBF interim lightweight title by defeating Zaur Abdullaev (20-2, 12 KOs) with scores of 118-110,
119-109, and 119-109. muratalla’s activity and power punches proved decisive.
“It feels great to finally have this [belt] around my waist,” Muratalla said. “[Abdullaev] was a tough fighter. He came to fight. We knew that. I was just using my skills,
just picked him apart and beat him every round.”
With Vasiliy Lomachenko, the IBF titleholder, recovering from injury, Muratalla is prepared to face him as the mandatory challenger.
“Absolutely,” muratalla said of potentially facing Lomachenko. “I’m the mandatory for him, so that’s what we’re looking forward to. It’ll be an honor to fight him to have
his name in my résumé, and I’m looking forward to that.”
