Navarrete-Suarez fight ruled no contest; WBO orders rematch
Updated June 3, 2025
Emanuel Navarrete’s defense of his WBO junior welterweight title against Charly Suarez has been overturned and declared a no-contest. The California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) made the unanimous decision Monday after reviewing footage of the May 10 fight at Pechanga Arena in San Diego.
The initial technical decision win for Navarrete followed a ringside doctor’s stoppage in the eighth round due to a cut over Navarrete’s left eyebrow. Referee Edward Collantes initially ruled the cut was caused by an accidental clash of heads, leading to the scorecards where Navarrete held a narrow lead.
However, video evidence surfaced shortly after the fight, revealing that a punch caused the cut. Had the referee recognized this during the bout, Suarez would have won by technical knockout, as Navarrete could not continue. The CSAC’s review of this new footage prompted the change in ruling, and the WBO later ordered a rematch to settle the boxing match.
Carl Moretti, Top Rank vice president of boxing operations, confirmed the company would comply with the WBO’s order for a rematch during the meeting. The WBO‘s decision aims to provide a definitive resolution to the controversial fight.
Navarrete, a Mexican fighter with a record of 39-2-1 (30 KOs), was heavily favored against Suarez (18-0, 10 KOs) from the Philippines. Suarez proved a difficult opponent, and the stoppage allowed Navarrete to retain his title. Now, a rematch is expected to provide a clearer outcome.
“In light of the foregoing, the World Boxing Organization (WBO) is hereby ordering a rematch,” the WBO said in a statement.
What’s next
Navarrete is currently under medical suspension by the California commission until July 9. The date and location for the ordered rematch between Navarrete and Suarez are yet to be persistent, but anticipation is building for the resolution of this junior welterweight title controversy.
