Navegantes, Santa Catarina, has achieved a significant milestone in its fight against dengue fever, eliminating all breeding sites of the Aedes aegypti mosquito for 12 consecutive weeks. Data from the department of Health indicates that all 107 larvitraps (mosquito traps) strategically placed throughout the city have remained free of mosquito larvae.
This is an unprecedented achievement in the state of Santa Catarina, largely attributed to the implementation of a bioinsecticide based on neem oil.The use of this environmentally friendly approach has proven highly effective in controlling mosquito populations.
Neem Oil Bioinsecticide: A Key Strategy
According to Secretary of Health, Pablo Sebastian velho, the success is directly linked to the actions taken by the municipal governance, particularly the adoption of the vegetable oil-based bioinsecticide. Neem oil disrupts the mosquito’s hormonal system, preventing it from maturing and reproducing. It is considered a safer choice to customary chemical insecticides, posing less risk to human health and the environment.
The city’s strategy also includes rigorous environmental surveillance to identify and eliminate potential breeding sites. This proactive approach, combined with the bioinsecticide, has created a powerful defense against the Aedes aegypti mosquito.
