South African human rights lawyer Navanethem Navi Pillay has won the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to promote peace and international law, dw.com reported. The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced the award on October 9, 2026, recognizing her extensive career defending universal legal principles and holding national leaders accountable.

Navi Pillay and Her Career in International Law

Born in Durban in 1941, Pillay grew up under apartheid and became one of South Africa’s first women of Indian descent to practice law, according to dw.com. She established her own law firm in 1967 and defended anti-apartheid activists, later earning a Doctor of Juridical Science degree from Harvard University in 1988. In 1995, she was appointed to the High Court of South Africa.

Pillay served as a judge and President of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, where she helped establish landmark legal precedents recognizing rape and sexual violence as acts of genocide, dw.com reported. She subsequently served as a judge at the International Criminal Court and as an ad hoc judge on the International Court of Justice in a case where Myanmar stood accused of genocide. From 2008 to 2014, she served as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, and from 2021 to 2025 she chaired a UN commission investigating human rights violations in Israel and the Palestinian territories, dw.com reported.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee Rationale and Nominations

According to nobelprize.org, the Nobel Committee awarded the prize to Pillay for her efforts to promote peace and international law. The committee emphasized her judicial rigor, personal integrity, and role as a driving force in developing an international system of law and order.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee received 287 nominations for the 2026 prize, with just over a quarter of those candidates being organizations. The committee noted that the ability to resolve conflicts without force depends on the international rule of law, making the accountability of war criminals a precondition for a peaceful world, nobelprize.org reported.

Context From Prior Laureates and Contenders

Last year’s Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado for her work promoting democratic rights, dw.com reported. Machado was unable to attend the December ceremony in person because the ruling Socialist government in Caracas warned she would become a fugitive if she fled the country, according to dw.com.

Machado later gave her Nobel medal to US President Donald Trump in January 2026 to seek Washington’s support, dw.com reported. Trump stated this week that he was very honored to receive the medal indirectly, noting that the recipient said nobody in history deserved it more, according to dw.com. Trump had also publicly stated ahead of the 2026 announcement that he deserved to win this year’s prize.
