Navigating Family Conflict: Addressing Disrespectful Behavior in Teens
Dear Abby: Aunts and Parenting Challenges
I have an issue with my sister and her 13-year-old son. My nephew acts disrespectfully. He yells at my sister and his grandmother and talks back. My sister has primary custody and co-parents with her ex.
When my nephew disrespected me, I spoke up. My sister disagreed and we argued. She makes excuses for his behavior, claiming he is upset or did not sleep well. I believe he needs to face consequences for his actions.
I am concerned that my nephew’s behavior is worsening. I stopped spending time with them because of this conflict.
Advice from Abby:
Your nephew may be acting out because he is entering his teenage years. His behavior might also reflect a lack of consequences for his actions.
Both parents should discuss respect with him. The grandmother should also address his bad behavior.
Consider avoiding interactions with the nephew until he improves his conduct.
