Navigating Thanksgiving: Managing Food Intolerances and Family Dynamics
Dear Care and Feeding,
I have a one-year-old daughter who cannot eat dairy or soy. She also has severe acid reflux and has developed stridor. We are following medical advice and avoiding these foods.
My mother doubts my daughter’s intolerances. She says I am making excuses not to go to Thanksgiving. I offered to host and prepare safe food, but my mother insisted that I am ruining the holiday for my daughter.
My daughter loves my parents. She enjoys FaceTiming with them and playing with her cousins. I feel torn. I want to keep her safe from allergens, but I don’t want her first Thanksgiving to be sad.
What should I do?
– Intolerant Thanksgiving
Dear Intolerant Thanksgiving,
It is surprising you consider visiting a home where your child’s health is not taken seriously. Your daughter won’t understand or care about Thanksgiving at her age. Don’t let your mother’s feelings dictate your decisions regarding your child’s health.
Enjoy the holiday at home. Your daughter’s well-being is more important than tradition. Tell your mother that if she wishes to see your daughter, she must respect medical advice.
