The Initial Partnership and League‌ Approval

In September 2021,⁢ the ⁢Los Angeles Clippers announced a sponsorship partnership with ⁤Aspiration, a financial technology company focused on enduring investing according too ESPN. A crucial element of the‌ agreement was ⁢a proposed jersey patch⁤ sponsorship, which necessitated explicit approval from the NBA.

NBA spokesperson ‍Mike Bass⁤ explained that the league requires approval⁤ for jersey patch deals due to the “level‌ of exposure” and to “avoid potential brand issues or‍ conflicts with league partnerships” as reported ⁢by ESPN. Despite initial uncertainty, the NBA did ratify the sponsorship agreement.

Questions Arise About ⁣Aspiration’s Legitimacy

The approval process wasn’t⁤ without its complications. NBA⁢ Commissioner Adam Silver initially stated on September ‍16, 2021, ⁢that he was unfamiliar with Aspiration as⁣ noted by ESPN. He‌ later clarified that he had heard of the brand but lacked specific knowledge regarding the allegations surrounding the company.

Kawhi Leonard‘s “No-Show” Contract and Financial Transactions

In April 2022, aspiration reportedly signed Los ‌Angeles Clippers‌ star Kawhi Leonard⁣ to⁢ a separate $28 million marketing deal according to ESPN. This agreement, though, was never publicly announced and included a clause allowing Leonard to opt out of obligations at‍ his discretion,⁢ as revealed in documents obtained by journalist ⁤Pablo Torre.

While⁢ Leonard’s contract didn’t ⁢require NBA approval, the league is now investigating whether the⁢ Clippers used the deal to circumvent the salary cap. Documents obtained by Torre show that Clippers owner⁢ Steve Ballmer, co-owner Dennis ‌Wong,‌ and the Clippers association itself made separate payments to ⁢Aspiration. Ballmer invested $50 ⁤million in Aspiration in ‌September 2021, ⁤and⁢ the⁤ team sent $32.4 million ⁢to Aspiration⁤ on April 4,2022 – the same day Leonard signed his “no-show” contract.

Partnership Termination and Legal Fallout

Despite NBA ⁢approval, Aspiration patches never appeared on Clippers jerseys. ⁢They were slated for ‍the ⁣2023-24 season, but the ⁢Clippers‌ terminated the partnership in January 2024 following reports of a federal investigation into Aspiration for perhaps misleading customers about its carbon credits as reported by ESPN. The Clippers stated ⁢they⁣ had terminated ⁣the partnership the prior season.

Aspiration filed for⁣ bankruptcy in March 2024. In August 2
